Indiana is stacking the defensive line once again.
Edge rusher Kellan Wyatt has been added to the Hoosiers’ roster for the 2026 season, sources confirmed. The return marks the second major defensive addition this week for the defending national champions, following the earlier announcement that star defensive lineman Stephen Daley would also come back for a fifth year.
Kellan Wyatt’s Strong Start Before Injury in 2025
Wyatt started the first seven games of the 2025 season for Indiana after transferring from Maryland. In limited action he recorded 27 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Michigan State.
At the time of the injury he ranked second on the team in tackles for loss and had already established himself as a disruptive presence on the edge. The former Maryland standout brought significant experience, arriving in Bloomington with more than 30 career starts.
Fifth-Year Eligibility Opens the Door
Wyatt’s return is made possible by a recent district court injunction in Colorado that granted additional eligibility to certain athletes from the 2022 high school class under the NCAA’s evolving “five-for-five” framework. Indiana officials cleared him to return, just as they did with Stephen Daley earlier in the week.
The NCAA has indicated it will appeal the ruling, but for now both players remain eligible to compete in 2026.
How Wyatt Fits into Indiana’s Deep Defensive Front
Indiana already possessed one of the strongest and deepest defensive lines in the country. Adding Wyatt back into the mix alongside Daley — who led the Big Ten with 19.0 tackles for loss last season — further elevates an already loaded group.
The Hoosiers have also brought in several transfer portal additions on the defensive line, creating intense competition and valuable depth. Wyatt’s combination of experience, production, and familiarity with the system gives the coaching staff another proven option on the edge.
What It Means for Indiana’s Title Defense
Curt Cignetti’s program enters 2026 as the defending national champion with elevated expectations. Returning multiple high-impact defensive linemen who missed significant time or were expected to move on strengthens the foundation of a unit that was already a strength.
Wyatt’s recovery timeline from the knee injury will be monitored closely throughout fall camp. If he can return to the form he showed in the first half of 2025, Indiana’s defensive front becomes even more difficult to deal with.
Bottom Line
Kellan Wyatt’s decision to return gives Indiana another experienced edge defender for the 2026 season. Combined with Stephen Daley’s earlier return, the Hoosiers have significantly reinforced one of the most important position groups on the roster.
For a team aiming to defend its national title, adding proven production and depth on the defensive line is a major win in the early stages of the offseason.
