In a powerful story that goes far beyond the football field, Florida State Seminoles offensive lineman Jayden Todd became a real-life hero last month. His quick thinking and physical strength helped save the life of an unconscious boater on the Homosassa River in Citrus County, Florida. Yesterday, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office officially honored him for his life-saving actions.
What Happened: The Dramatic River Rescue
On a fishing trip with FSU teammates Blake Nichelson, A.J. Cottrill, and Caleb LaVallee, Todd and the group spotted a man (identified as Michael Hoffmann) floating unconscious in the water, kept afloat only by his life jacket.
Without hesitation, the 6-foot-6, 314-pound Todd jumped off the moving boat into the river. He swam to the man and, using his size and strength, was able to pull him back to the boat something others on the scene said would have been extremely difficult.
Once back on the boat, Hoffmann was not breathing and had turned purple. Todd’s teammates quickly flagged down a nearby Citrus County Sheriff’s deputy, who used an AED and performed CPR. Additional help arrived, and Hoffmann was rushed to a hospital. He later regained consciousness after what was described as a heart-related incident.
The entire rescue from Todd jumping in to getting Hoffmann to safety took under 20 minutes.
Jayden Todd Honored by Citrus County Sheriff’s Office

On July 8, 2026, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office publicly recognized Todd’s bravery. Officials called him a “true hero” and praised how his actions, combined with quick teamwork from his teammates and first responders, saved a life that day.
Todd remained humble about the incident, saying it was simply something that needed to be done and he was in the right place at the right time.
Why This Story Matters for FSU Football & Beyond
Jayden Todd’s heroic act highlights the character and leadership many FSU players bring to the program. In a sport often criticized for off-field issues, stories like this remind fans and recruits of the positive impact athletes can have in their communities.
For the Seminoles football team, it shows the type of young men Coach Mike Norvell is bringing in — not just talented players, but individuals with strong character.
