England’s right-back position remains a major concern heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Norway. With key players facing fitness issues and suspensions, manager Gareth Southgate must find a solution quickly. Here’s the latest on the situation.
England’s Right-Back Problem: Reece James & Djed Spence Fitness Doubts
England’s traditional right-back options are under a cloud:
- Reece James: Ongoing fitness concerns continue to limit his availability.
- Djed Spence: Also struggling with fitness, leaving question marks over his ability to start.
These issues have forced Southgate to explore alternative solutions for the crucial knockout clash.
Jarell Quansah Suspension Adds to Defensive Headache
To make matters worse, Jarell Quansah is suspended after receiving a red card in the previous match against Mexico. His absence further complicates England’s defensive selections for the Norway game.
Possible Solutions: Ezri Konsa at Right-Back with John Stones at Centre-Back?
One potential fix being discussed is shifting Ezri Konsa to right-back, allowing John Stones to drop into central defense. This adjustment could provide stability, but it would require Konsa to adapt to a new role under high pressure.
What This Means for England vs Norway Quarter-Final
England’s defensive organisation will be tested against a dangerous Norway side. The right-back dilemma could influence tactics, formation, and overall team performance in this high-stakes match.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Southgate’s decision as the team prepares for what could be a season-defining game.
