The New York Mets entered 2026 with legitimate World Series aspirations. Instead, a brutal 12-game losing streak in April sent the season off the rails, and New York never fully recovered, ultimately missing the playoffs in what’s been a deeply disappointing campaign. But amid the frustration, one storyline has given Mets fans something real to be excited about: the emergence of rookie outfielder Carson Benge as a legitimate building block for the franchise’s future.
Carson Benge’s Rocky Start to His Rookie Season
Benge’s rookie campaign didn’t begin smoothly. He announced his arrival with a home run on Opening Day, but struggled mightily in the weeks that followed, hitting just .136/.219/.197 over his first 73 plate appearances with only one home run and one double. It was the kind of stretch that could have easily led to a quick demotion for a less-heralded prospect. Instead, the Mets stuck with their 2024 first-round pick (19th overall), giving him the runway to learn against big-league pitching rather than yanking him at the first sign of trouble.
How Carson Benge Turned His Season Around
That patience has paid off in a major way. Benge has developed into the most valuable player on New York’s roster this season, leading the team with 3.4 fWAR. Entering Sunday, he was hitting .273/.337/.414 across 591 plate appearances, with 17 home runs, 19 doubles, and 22 stolen bases. His defense has been just as impactful — Benge leads all National League right fielders in outfield assists with 10, to go along with two double plays started from the outfield.
Carson Benge Joins Darryl Strawberry in Exclusive Mets History
Benge’s blend of power and speed has already put him in franchise-defining company. Earlier this season, his 15th home run made him just the second rookie in Mets history to reach 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases in a single season — joining franchise legend Darryl Strawberry, who accomplished the same feat back in 1983 en route to winning National League Rookie of the Year. Strawberry, coincidentally, was also a former first-round pick the Mets were counting on to become a franchise cornerstone, making the historical parallel even more fitting.
Benge’s arm has drawn its own share of attention, too. During one stretch this season, he recorded two outfield assists in a single inning both clocked at 99-plus mph — a feat unmatched since Statcast tracking began in 2015 — including a 103.9 mph throw that ranked as the third-hardest outfield assist recorded in that span, trailing only throws from Aaron Hicks and Brett Phillips.
Carson Benge’s Signature Performance Against the Yankees
Benge’s all-around ability was on full display Saturday against the crosstown rival Yankees. He went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in New York’s 12-2 victory, while also flashing elite defense with a running catch that robbed Yankees star Aaron Judge of extra bases. The performance was impressive enough that fellow outfielder Juan Soto said afterward that Benge no longer surprises him anymore — Soto said he now views his rookie teammate as an outright superstar.
Is Carson Benge Actually a Superstar Yet?
It’s fair to note that Benge still has work to do before that label fully applies. A single strong rookie season, however impressive, isn’t the same as sustained, multi-year stardom, and Benge will need to prove 2026 wasn’t simply a career-best outlier. That said, if he can carry this level of performance into 2027 and beyond, Juan Soto’s superstar prediction may end up looking prophetic far sooner than most expected.
Why Carson Benge Matters for the Mets’ Future
With 2026 already a lost season in terms of playoff contention, Benge’s development represents something arguably more valuable for the organization long-term: a young, controllable, two-way outfielder who looks capable of anchoring the Mets’ lineup for years to come. For a fan base disappointed by another season without October baseball, watching Benge string together historic milestones has at least offered a legitimate reason for optimism heading into 2027.
