Michigan entered Saturday’s game against Penn State needing a response after back-to-back losses. Instead, the first half delivered more of the same problems that have defined much of the season. Starter Bryce Underwood completed 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards and threw two interceptions. The Wolverines managed just 80 total yards, punted repeatedly, and went into halftime trailing 3-0 after a scoreless first half.

Coach Kyle Whittingham made the change at the break, inserting true freshman Tommy Carr. The move produced an immediate shift. Carr completed 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards and added 36 rushing yards with a 12-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. Michigan scored 21 points in the second half, turned three Penn State turnovers into points, and held on for a 21-18 win at Michigan Stadium. The victory improved the Wolverines to 4-2 overall and gave them their first Big Ten win of the season.

Carr is the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and the younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr. He had seen limited action earlier in the year. Against Penn State he played with control, avoided turnovers, and gave the offense a different dimension with his legs. The running game also found more success in the second half, finishing with 212 rushing yards for the game after a quiet first half.

Underwood, the former top overall recruit, has now been benched for the first time this season. Through six games he has more interceptions than touchdown passes, and the offense has struggled for consistency under the new staff. Whittingham has previously noted the learning curve with the offense’s reads and RPOs. Saturday’s first-half performance, including the two interceptions and limited production, left the coaching staff little choice.

After the game, Whittingham said he was not prepared to name Carr the starter going forward. He indicated the staff would review the film and evaluate what improved in the second half. That leaves the quarterback situation open heading into the next game. Michigan hosts Indiana next week, a team that just lost a close game to Ohio State.

The win provides a temporary reset and gives fans something positive to discuss after two straight losses. It also raises clear questions about the long-term plan at quarterback. Underwood remains a high-upside talent with significant physical tools, but the results through six games have not matched the expectations that came with his recruitment. Carr’s clean second half showed he can manage the game and contribute in the run game, yet the sample size is still small.

For now, the staff has flexibility. The bye is not until later, and the remaining schedule includes tough Big Ten opponents. Whether Underwood regains the job, Carr keeps it, or the competition continues will depend on practice this week and how the staff weighs the film. The 21-18 win solved the immediate problem of a losing streak, but it did not resolve the larger quarterback issue that has followed Michigan all season. Fans are talking because the change produced results. What comes next will determine whether Saturday was a one-game spark or the start of a longer shift.
