For the second consecutive week, the No. 1 team in college football fell to an unranked opponent by a final score of 27-24 on a game-winning field goal. A week earlier, Oklahoma had knocked off Texas in the Red River Rivalry. On October 17 at Sanford Stadium, it was Auburn that delivered the next stunner, beating Georgia 27-24 in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. The result snapped Georgia’s nine-game winning streak in the series, ended a 53-game streak against unranked teams, and marked the first time the top-ranked team had lost in back-to-back weeks since 1990.

Georgia jumped out quickly. Dwight Phillips Jr. scored on a 15-yard run, and Gunner Stockton connected with Lawson Luckie on a 24-yard touchdown pass to build a 14-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. At that point the outcome looked familiar. Georgia had dominated the series for nearly a decade, and the early margin suggested another comfortable afternoon in Athens. Auburn, an 18.5-point underdog according to pregame odds, responded instead with 24 unanswered points.

The Tigers closed the gap with a trick play, a 24-yard touchdown pass from Christian Neptune to Keshaun Singleton. Byrum Brown then threw a 9-yard touchdown to Chas Nimrod, and Alex McPherson added a 49-yard field goal to give Auburn a 17-14 halftime lead. In the third quarter Brown scored on a 5-yard run to push the advantage to 24-14. Georgia managed only a field goal and a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24-24 with 2:58 remaining. Stockton capped a 94-yard drive with a 4-yard pass to London Humphreys. The Bulldogs appeared to have the momentum.

That momentum disappeared with 58 seconds left. Stockton, already responsible for two interceptions earlier in the game, fumbled on a run near midfield. Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered at the Auburn 44-yard line. The Tigers needed only a few plays and a roughing-the-passer penalty on Georgia’s Gabe Harris Jr. to reach field-goal range. McPherson then drilled a 34-yard kick as time expired. It was Auburn’s first walk-off field goal in regulation since Wes Byrum’s kick against Oregon in the 2010 national championship game.

Stockton finished 22 of 34 for 272 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The three turnovers matched the total he had produced in the first six games of the season combined. He was also hit on the opening play of the game and left briefly with what Kirby Smart later described as a shoulder stinger, though he returned. Smart noted afterward that ball security remains fundamental and credited Auburn’s physical play at the line of scrimmage. Georgia outgained Auburn 440 yards to 366, yet the turnovers decided the outcome.

Brown carried the load for Auburn. He rushed 26 times for 115 yards and a touchdown while completing 15 of 27 passes for 150 yards and another score. The Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage for long stretches, which allowed them to answer Georgia’s early burst and keep the Bulldogs from establishing their usual rhythm. Auburn coach Alex Golesh, in his first season, called the win a reflection of the detail and physical mindset his staff has emphasized. He noted it was the program’s second road victory over a top-ranked team in history and the first since 1994.

The historical context adds weight to the result. Unranked teams had lost 195 consecutive games against No. 1 opponents when trailing by 14 or more points entering the game. Auburn became the first unranked team to beat a top-ranked Georgia squad since 1942. It was also the Tigers’ first win in Athens in 21 years and their first victory over the Bulldogs since 2017. McPherson, a fifth-year player who had never been part of a winning season at Auburn before this year, described the kick as the kind of moment he had dreamed about since childhood. He made two field goals on the day, including the earlier 49-yarder that helped shift the first-half momentum.

For Georgia the loss ends a short stay at No. 1 and raises immediate questions about the remainder of the schedule. The Bulldogs are now 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SEC. They have a bye next week before facing Florida in Atlanta on October 31. Smart has built a program that rarely loses to unranked teams at home, and the three turnovers from the quarterback position stood out as the clearest difference on Saturday. Georgia’s defense forced a late punt and nearly regained the lead, but the final fumble erased those opportunities.

Auburn improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC. The win is the program’s first against a ranked opponent since 2021 and provides a signature result for Golesh’s first season. The Tigers still face a difficult remaining schedule, but the ability to rally from a 14-point deficit on the road against the top-ranked team supplies tangible evidence that the physical approach the coaching staff has stressed can produce results against elite competition.

The sequence itself was straightforward once the game reached the final minute. Georgia tied the score. Auburn punted after a sack and a bad snap. Stockton fumbled on the ensuing drive. Auburn recovered, gained a few yards, benefited from a penalty, and McPherson made the kick. That chain of events turned an early Georgia lead into one of the largest upsets of the season. For the second straight Saturday, the No. 1 team lost on a last-second field goal to an unranked rival. Auburn’s version came in Athens, ended multiple streaks, and gave the Tigers a result they can point to for the rest of the year.
