Ohio State’s bye week following its 19-15 win over Indiana on October 17 gave the Buckeyes valuable time to recover from a physical Big Ten road game. That contest left several players dealing with injuries across multiple positions, and the coaching staff has spent the intervening days evaluating who will be available for Saturday’s matchup against USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Head coach Ryan Day has provided updates that paint a mixed picture: two important contributors have been cleared to return, while two wide receivers remain listed as questionable on the official availability report.

The most significant long-term absence is already confirmed. Quarterback Julian Sayin is out for the USC game and is not expected to return for the remainder of the regular season after suffering an arm injury late in the Indiana contest. Running back Ja’Kobi Jackson is also out after undergoing surgery for a Lisfranc injury and is not projected to return until later in November at the earliest. Those two absences alone force Ohio State to adjust both its passing and rushing attack on the road against a USC defense that has shown vulnerabilities this season.

Offensive Line and Defensive Line Reinforcements

On the positive side, Day has expressed confidence that the offensive line will be closer to full strength. Offensive lineman Austin Siereveld, who missed the previous two games with a non-football illness, has been cleared and does not appear on the questionable or out list. Day noted that the staff expects a full arsenal of linemen available for the week of practice and indicated Siereveld is likely to return at tackle rather than the right guard spot he occupied earlier in the season. That flexibility should allow Ohio State to keep Gabe VanSickle at right guard while potentially restoring Siereveld on the edge, giving the line more experienced options as a new quarterback takes over.

Defensive end Kenyatta Jackson Jr. has also been cleared after leaving the Indiana game with a knee issue. His return strengthens the pass rush at a time when the Buckeyes will face USC quarterback Jayden Maiava, who has thrown for more than 2,000 yards this season. Day had previously said the bye week arrived at a helpful time and that the majority of players who were limited after Indiana should be ready to practice and potentially play. The clearance of Siereveld and Jackson Jr. supports that assessment and gives the staff more depth along both lines of scrimmage.

Wide Receiver Uncertainty

The receiving corps presents a less clear picture. Wide receivers Brandon Inniss and Brock Boyd are both listed as questionable. Inniss had returned from an earlier absence to play against Indiana, while Boyd sat out that game. Their status will be monitored through the final practices of the week. Day has not ruled either player out, but the official report keeps them in the questionable category alongside cornerback Jay Timmons, linebacker Eli Lee, and cornerback Amar’e Miller.

If one or both wide receivers are limited or unavailable, Ohio State will lean more heavily on Jeremiah Smith and other available options such as Chris Henry Jr. and Phillip Bell. Smith has been the primary target throughout the season and will be especially important with a first-time starter at quarterback. The staff has continued to develop packages around the healthy receivers while evaluating how much Inniss and Boyd can contribute. The uncertainty at the position adds another layer of complexity to an offense already adjusting to life without Sayin.

Defensive Availability and Game Planning

On the defensive side, Day has indicated that most of the players who were injured or limited against Indiana should be available, even if not every one of them is fully cleared. Jay Timmons, who left the Indiana game early in the fourth quarter after dealing with a hamstring issue earlier in the season, is questionable and will travel with the team. His availability could be significant because USC’s passing attack ranks among the more productive units the Buckeyes will face. Other defensive contributors are expected to be closer to full strength, which should help the secondary and front seven match up against Maiava and the Trojans’ skill players.

The combination of returning linemen and lingering questions at wide receiver and nickelback will shape how Day and his coordinators prepare. The offensive line’s improved health is particularly relevant because the Buckeyes will be breaking in either Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair under center. Protection and the ability to establish a run game without Ja’Kobi Jackson become even more important when the quarterback has limited experience. Defensively, getting Jackson Jr. back and having most of the secondary available should allow the staff to maintain the physical style that limited Indiana to 15 points.

Looking Ahead to Saturday

Ohio State enters the USC game at 6-1 and 4-0 in the Big Ten. The availability report released midweek confirms Sayin and Jackson as out, lists Siereveld and Jackson Jr. as available, and keeps Inniss and Boyd as questionable. Day has described the overall situation as manageable after the bye week, noting that the staff will continue to evaluate players through the final practices before determining exact roles for Saturday night. The returns along the offensive and defensive lines provide tangible help, while the wide receiver questions leave some flexibility in how the offense will be structured against USC’s secondary.

The mixed update reflects the reality of a long season: some players have recovered enough to contribute, while others remain day-to-day. For a Buckeyes team that has already navigated an injury at the most important offensive position, the ability to get Siereveld and Jackson Jr. back offers a measure of stability heading into a road environment. How the questionable wide receivers and Timmons progress over the next two days will further define the personnel packages Day can deploy when Ohio State takes the field at the Coliseum.
