ESPN’s FPI Ranks Ohio State No. 1 After Week 7 — Can the Buckeyes Stay There Without Julian Sayin?

ESPN’s Football Power Index, updated after Week 7, places Ohio State at the top of its rankings. The Buckeyes moved into the No. 1 spot following their 19-15 road win over Indiana. The model, which measures team strength as a predictor of future performance based on results to date and remaining schedule, has Ohio State ahead of Notre Dame, Georgia, Miami, and Indiana.

The ranking arrived the same weekend starting quarterback Julian Sayin left the Indiana game in the fourth quarter with an injury to his throwing arm. He returned to the sideline wearing a sling. Coach Ryan Day said afterward that Sayin would “probably be out for several weeks.” No official diagnosis has been released, and Day indicated more details would come after further evaluation by the training staff. Outside medical commentary based on available video has mentioned possible UCL or shoulder issues, with general recovery estimates ranging from roughly two to four weeks depending on severity. Those assessments are not official.

Ohio State has a bye week on October 24 before traveling to USC on October 31. The next game after that is a home contest against Oregon on November 7. The remaining regular-season schedule also includes Northwestern, a trip to Nebraska, and the finale against Michigan. “Several weeks” covers the USC game and, depending on the exact timeline and how recovery progresses, could extend into the Oregon game or beyond. True freshman Luke Fahey finished the Indiana contest and is expected to prepare as the starter during the bye. Sophomore Tavien St. Clair is also on the roster.

FPI is a forward-looking computer model rather than a traditional poll of accomplishments. It updates based on results and projected performance. Ohio State’s No. 1 ranking reflects the team’s body of work through seven games, including the win over Indiana, along with the strength of the remaining schedule. It does not automatically adjust in real time for a multi-week absence at quarterback unless subsequent results or updated projections change the rating. If the Buckeyes continue to win with a backup quarterback, the model is likely to keep them near the top. If the offense struggles significantly without Sayin against USC, Oregon, or other remaining opponents, the rating can drop.

Sayin entered the Indiana game as one of the more productive quarterbacks in the country, completing over 70 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns against two interceptions before the injury. His absence removes the starter who has directed most of the offense this season. Ohio State’s defense and skill-position talent, including wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, remain in place. The staff has used the bye to regroup and adjust the offense, as Day noted after the game. Whether that adjustment is enough to maintain the production the model currently projects is the open question.

The FPI ranking places Ohio State first right now. Maintaining that position through the rest of the season will depend on results, not the ranking itself. The next data point arrives on October 31 at USC. If Fahey and the offense manage the game effectively and the Buckeyes win, the model has little reason to move them. If the absence of the starting quarterback produces the kind of offensive drop-off that has appeared in other programs when a starter is sidelined for multiple weeks, the ranking is subject to change. Ohio State currently sits at No. 1 in ESPN’s FPI. The outcome of the next several games will determine whether that holds.
