Indiana just received a significant boost to its 2026 title defense.
Star defensive lineman Stephen Daley has announced he will return to the Hoosiers for a fifth season of eligibility. The decision comes after a court ruling opened the door for certain athletes from the Class of 2022 to gain an extra year, and it keeps one of the conference’s most disruptive front-seven players in the fold.
Stephen Daley’s Standout 2025 Season
Daley was a major force for Indiana last fall. He led the team and ranked among the national leaders with 19.0 tackles for loss. He also recorded 5.5 sacks while appearing in 13 games.
Those numbers become even more impressive when considering the context of his season. Daley began the year as a backup before stepping into a larger role after an injury to another edge player. Once given consistent opportunities, he produced at a high level and earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten recognition.
His production helped anchor a defensive front that played a central role in Indiana’s run to the Big Ten championship and eventual national title.
Injury Sidelines Daley During Playoff Run
Daley’s season ended in unusual fashion. Following Indiana’s 13-10 victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, he suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating with family near the stands. The injury forced him to miss the entire College Football Playoff run.
He later declared for the NFL Draft but went undrafted and unsigned, largely due to the recovery timeline from the knee injury. By early summer he indicated he would not be at full strength until late summer or early fall.
Why Daley’s Return Matters for Indiana
Indiana already boasts a deep and talented defensive line. The program added multiple edge rushers through the transfer portal, creating competition and depth at the position. Still, adding a proven producer with Daley’s track record of generating pressure and stopping the run is a clear upgrade.
His experience and production give the Hoosiers another high-upside piece on a defense that returns significant talent from last year’s championship team. For a program looking to defend its title, retaining a player who ranked near the top of the nation in tackles for loss is a meaningful win.
Eligibility Path and Timing
Daley’s return was made possible by a recent district court ruling that granted additional eligibility to certain athletes. Indiana cleared him to return, and he quickly made his intentions public.
In his announcement, Daley expressed excitement about getting back to work with the program. The timing allows him to continue rehabilitating while preparing for the upcoming season alongside a roster that already knows how to win at a high level.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Indiana enters the year as the defending national champion with elevated expectations. The defensive front was already projected to be one of the team’s strengths. Daley’s decision to return only strengthens that outlook.
If he can regain full health and recapture the form that produced 19 tackles for loss a year ago, opposing offenses will face an even more difficult challenge. For the Hoosiers, the addition of a proven disruptor at a premium position is one of the more encouraging developments of the offseason.
Stephen Daley is back in Bloomington. The defending champions just got stronger up front.
