Michigan Stadium was loud for most of the afternoon, but the noise never translated into points that mattered. On October 24, the Wolverines fell 13-6 in overtime to No. 6 Indiana, a result that left them at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. The defense held the defending national champions to 212 total yards and six points through regulation. The offense could not return the favor.

Michigan reached the red zone multiple times and still finished with only two field goals. True freshman Tommy Carr, making his first career start, completed 20 of 32 passes for 167 yards. He also threw an interception and lost a fumble. The running game managed just 57 yards on 42 carries. No touchdowns were scored. For a program that entered the season with playoff hopes, the numbers raise a straightforward question: can this offense generate enough points to win the games the defense keeps competitive?

What Happened Against Indiana

Carr started in place of Bryce Underwood, who had been benched at halftime the previous week against Penn State. Early mistakes defined the first half. Carr fumbled on a pitch and later threw an interception; both turnovers led to Indiana field goals and a 6-0 lead at the break. Michigan’s first points came on a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter. A late drive in the fourth, featuring a 24-yard completion to Channing Goodwin, set up a 26-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.

In the extra period, Indiana scored on a four-yard touchdown run by Josh Hoover. Michigan’s final possession ended when Carr’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete. The Wolverines never crossed the goal line. Carr was sacked four times, including on third-and-goal from the one-yard line after a drive that had reached the Indiana 1. Head coach Kyle Whittingham later pointed to the inability to run the ball and the failures inside the red zone as the primary issues.

The defense, by contrast, limited Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover to 8-of-18 passing for 81 yards and one interception. Indiana’s only points through regulation came from two field goals. Michigan outgained the Hoosiers in total yards (224-212) and first downs (16-11), yet the scoreboard told a different story.

A Season-Long Pattern

The Indiana game was not an isolated low point. Through seven games, Michigan has scored 21 points or fewer in six of them. The Wolverines average roughly 22-23 points per game, ranking near the bottom of the Big Ten and well outside the top 100 nationally. The rushing attack has been especially ineffective; earlier in the season the team ranked near the bottom of the conference in yards per carry and in runs of 10 yards or more. Jordan Marshall and Savion Hiter have not found consistent lanes, and the offensive line has struggled to create push against physical fronts.

The quarterback situation has compounded the problem. Underwood, the former No. 1 overall recruit, started the first several games but dealt with turnovers and limited production. Carr’s relief appearance against Penn State produced better results and a win, which led to the change against Indiana. In his first start, however, the same issues appeared: protection breakdowns, red-zone stalls, and self-inflicted mistakes. Carr showed flashes—he converted a key fourth down with his legs in overtime and completed several intermediate throws in the second half—but the overall output remained modest.

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck has faced scrutiny for play selection. One frequently cited example was the third-and-goal call from the 1 against Indiana, a play-action bootleg that ended in a sack. Similar decisions have left the offense in long-yardage situations or failed to capitalize on short-yardage opportunities. Whittingham has publicly stood by Beck, noting the coordinator’s previous success at Utah, but the results in Ann Arbor have not matched those earlier numbers.

Why the Struggles Matter

Michigan’s defense has kept the team in games it otherwise might have lost by larger margins. Holding a top-10 opponent to 13 points is a solid performance. The problem is that the offense has not been able to turn those defensive stands into victories. All three of Michigan’s losses this season have been by one score or in overtime. In each case, the Wolverines had opportunities to score late or in critical situations and did not.

The schedule does not get dramatically easier. Michigan travels to Rutgers next, then hosts Michigan State before a trip to Oregon. Wins are still available, but the margin for error is small when the offense is producing at this level. A continued inability to score in the red zone or establish the run will make every remaining game a low-scoring grind.

Looking Ahead

Carr’s first start provided some evidence that he can move the offense in stretches, particularly in the second half. Whether that continues will depend on improved protection, a more consistent run game, and cleaner execution in scoring territory. The staff must also decide how to deploy Underwood going forward; he saw limited action against Indiana after the earlier benching.

For now, the record sits at 4-3. The defense has done its part in multiple contests. The larger question is whether the offense can improve enough over the final five games to salvage a respectable season, or whether the same limitations that appeared against Indiana will continue to cap what this team can accomplish. The numbers from October 24 suggest the answer is not yet clear.
