Michigan’s Hidden Crisis: The Second-Half Collapse Nobody Wants to Talk About

Ask any Michigan fan what’s wrong with the Wolverines and you’ll get a one-word answer: offense. Should the run game carry the team? Is Bryce Underwood the right quarterback? Those debates are loud, and for good reason.

The Offense Deserves the HeatExhibit A: Iowa and the 3.1% CollapseExhibit B: Minnesota and the Slow LeakThe Twist: It All ConnectsWhy This MattersMy Take

But there’s a second story hiding behind the first, and it may matter just as much. Michigan isn’t only struggling to score. It keeps handing games back after it had them in hand.

The Offense Deserves the Heat

The numbers back up the frustration. ESPN’s SP+ ranks the Michigan offense 76th in the country, far below what anyone expected of this team. The Week 1 game against Western Michigan only ended the way it did because of a controversial call in the final second. Without it, Michigan would be heading into its bye with a losing record.

So yes, the offense is a problem. It just isn’t the only one.

Exhibit A: Iowa and the 3.1% Collapse

Start with Week 3. Michigan had been behind for only about two minutes all game. Iowa was pinned at its own 9-yard line with 1:46 left, and ESPN’s win-probability model gave the Hawkeyes a 3.1% chance of winning. For all practical purposes, the game was over.

Then it wasn’t. Iowa marched 91 yards in 11 plays, helped along by a 15-yard unnecessary-roughness penalty from Michigan. Quarterback Hank Brown then made the two biggest throws of his career: a 29-yard completion to tight end Addison Ostrenda, and a 16-yard touchdown pass on the final play to finish the comeback.

Few teams lose a game from that position. Michigan found a way.

Exhibit B: Minnesota and the Slow Leak

Last Saturday’s loss to Minnesota was less a sudden collapse than a slow leak.

The first half looked promising. Cornerback Jyaire Hill took an interception 79 yards for a touchdown to put Michigan up 14-7, and the defense then forced a punt in four plays. The Wolverines had a chance to extend the lead before the break.

After halftime, everything unraveled:

  • Michigan muffed a punt, handing Minnesota a short field that became a field goal.
  • The Gophers got another field goal on their next drive.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, Minnesota scored a touchdown in three plays and took a lead it never gave up.

Special teams gave the Gophers the opening, and the defense couldn’t close it.

The Twist: It All Connects

It would be easy to blame the defense and special teams and move on. That would miss the pattern.

Look at what the offense did in the same games. Against Minnesota, it threw two interceptions in its first three plays of the second half. That left a defense that was already tired right back on the field, and a collapse started to feel inevitable. Over its last two possessions, the offense gained a total of 19 yards, which meant even more time on the field for that defense.

A defense can only survive so many short fields and so many snaps. At some point, the pressure the offense creates for itself spills over to everyone else.

Why This Matters

The fix isn’t “improve the offense” or “improve the defense.” It’s making all three phases work together:

  1. Offense: stop giving the ball away and start sustaining drives, so the defense gets rest.
  2. Defense: finish games instead of leaking points late.
  3. Special teams: stop gifting field position, especially in the second half.

Every one of those units has contributed to the recent losses. Michigan has been blaming one part of the team when the problem is all three.

My Take

This season’s story isn’t the quarterback debate. It’s the fourth quarter. Michigan has shown it can build leads and even hold them for a while. What it hasn’t shown is the ability to finish.

The bye week is a chance to fix that. If Michigan comes out of it with all three phases playing as one team, the season is still alive. If not, the second-half collapses will keep defining it.
