Roddy Gayle Jr. didn’t play in Michigan’s 87-62 exhibition win over Eastern Michigan on October 11 because of a gap in his court injunction. Coach Mike Boynton Jr. said the order didn’t address Gayle’s NBA Summer League participation, so it needs an amendment. Boynton hopes it comes within a couple of days.

For Michigan fans, this was a surprise. For Ohio State fans, it’s a familiar name in a very unfamiliar situation. Gayle spent two seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Michigan, and now he’s at the center of a legal fight over a fifth year. Here’s what happened and what comes next.

What Happened Sunday

Michigan
Michigan

Michigan opened its three-game exhibition slate at Crisler Center in Mike Boynton Jr.’s first game as head coach. The Wolverines won 87-62, led by Trey McKenney’s 21 points. Quinn Costello added 16, J.P. Estrella 14, and Elliot Cadeau had 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Gayle, expected to start, never played. A program spokesperson said Michigan is still working through the legal process regarding his eligibility. Freshman Marcus Moller also sat out, as expected. Ricky Liburd started at the 3, and Costello took that spot in the second half.

The Injunction Wrinkle, Explained

Gayle is trying to play a fifth college season under the NCAA’s new “five-for-five” rule, which seemed to include every college player except the 2022 high school class, his class.

His case has a complication. Gayle played in the NBA Summer League with the Detroit Pistons after going undrafted. Boynton said it plainly: “His injunction order didn’t address his participation in Summer League.”

Another player in the same position, former Columbia guard Kenny Noland, did play 14 minutes on Sunday. Boynton said Noland’s order has the Summer League wording and Gayle’s doesn’t. He called it a likely oversight and said Michigan isn’t part of the legal process.

SI’s report says this shouldn’t affect Gayle’s eligibility for the season. But the legal picture isn’t fully settled. A New York judge granted a preliminary injunction on September 24, and the NCAA is expected to appeal.

How Gayle Got Here: A Quick Timeline

DateWhat happened
Aug. 31Gayle sues the NCAA, seeking eligibility for 2026-27
Sept. 24A New York judge grants a preliminary injunction
Oct. 11Gayle misses Michigan’s exhibition opener
Oct. 16Michigan hosts Oregon State in its next exhibition

Why Michigan Needs Him

Gayle’s return went from luxury to necessity. Five-star freshman Brandon McCoy Jr. tore his ACL and is out for the season, which turned Gayle into Michigan’s likely starting 3.

His story helps explain why. At Ohio State he averaged 13.5 points in his sophomore year before transferring to Michigan in 2024. After a rough shooting stretch he moved to the bench, where he became a scoring threat and a strong defender. He was named to the All-Midwest Regional Team during Michigan’s national championship run.

Boynton says he’s seen Gayle improve as a shooter and playmaker. That matters. Michigan needs a third ball handler alongside Cadeau and McKenney, and Gayle may be the answer.

What Happens Next

The key date is Friday, when Michigan hosts Oregon State at 7 p.m. If the amendment comes through, Gayle should be cleared. If not, he could miss another exhibition. Either way, the bigger question is the NCAA’s expected appeal, which could affect his eligibility beyond these preseason games.

My Take

I wouldn’t read much into Sunday. An exhibition game is the cheapest place to lose a player for a day, and Michigan won by 25 without him. But it’s a reminder that Gayle’s season rests on court rulings, not just basketball. Michigan needs those details settled before the regular season.
