Fall camp is nearly complete, and Michigan opens the season on September 5 against Western Michigan. Coming off a 9-4 campaign, the Wolverines enter Year 1 under Kyle Whittingham with clear goals: return to Big Ten contention and reach the College Football Playoff.

Michigan Drops One Game It Should WinThe Bigger Picture

Here are eight bold predictions for the 2026 season.

1. Bryce Underwood Contends for Michigan’s Single-Season Passing Touchdown Record

Michigan’s single-season passing touchdown record stands at 25, shared by Elvis Grbac (1991) and Chad Henne (2004). Rather than targeting John Navarre’s long-standing yardage mark, the prediction shifts to Underwood challenging that touchdown total.

With another year of development and more playmakers around him, Underwood has a realistic shot at approaching or matching the record in a more balanced offense.

2. Jordan Marshall Enters Heisman Conversation

Five-star Savion Hiter will generate plenty of buzz, but Jordan Marshall is projected as the lead back. Marshall nearly reached 1,000 rushing yards last season despite not starting the year and dealing with injuries down the stretch.

In an offense that has ranked among the nation’s best rushing attacks recently, a healthy Marshall could post a major statistical season and force his name into early Heisman discussions.

3. Andrew Marsh Joins the 1,000-Yard Club

Michigan has not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Jeremy Gallon in 2013. That drought ends in 2026.

Andrew Marsh emerged as one of the Big Ten’s better wideouts once he earned consistent opportunities. With JJ Buchanan also commanding attention, Marsh should see favorable matchups and the volume needed to reach the milestone as a sophomore.

4. Rod Moore Leads the Team in Interceptions

Rod Moore led Michigan with four interceptions in 2022. Injuries limited his availability the past two seasons, making a return to that level of production feel bold.

Reports indicate Moore is healthy and expected to be ready for Week 1. Paired with a strong safety group that includes Chris Bracy, Moore is positioned to lead the Wolverines in takeaways again.

5. Carter Meadows Finishes Among the Team’s Top Four in Sacks

The 6-foot-7, 252-pound five-star edge rusher has the physical tools to make an immediate impact. Michigan is deep at the position, with John Henry Daley expected to lead the room.

When Meadows gets his opportunities, he will produce. Landing in the top four on the team in sacks is an achievable and eye-catching outcome for a true freshman-caliber talent.

6. Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng Emerges as a Top Linebacker

Owusu-Boateng may begin the year lower on the depth chart behind names like Nathaniel Staehling, Troy Bowles, and Chase Taylor. His talent and ceiling remain among the highest in the group.

After dealing with injuries last season, a healthy Owusu-Boateng is expected to play meaningful snaps and steadily climb the depth chart as the year progresses.

7. Michigan Steals One Major Road Win

The Wolverines face a brutal slate that includes home games against Oklahoma and Indiana plus road trips to Oregon and Ohio State. Securing a College Football Playoff berth likely requires at least 10 wins.

Pulling off an upset on the road against either the Ducks or the Buckeyes would dramatically improve Michigan’s résumé and signal real progress in Whittingham’s first season.

8. Michigan Drops One Game It Should Win

College football is full of traps. Even if the Wolverines knock off one of the blue-blood road opponents, they remain vulnerable to a letdown against a team they are expected to beat.

Possible candidates include home games against Iowa or Penn State, or a road contest at Minnesota. One such slip-up would keep the season from reaching its full ceiling.

The Bigger Picture

These predictions assume health, continued development from Underwood, and steady improvement under the new staff. Michigan has the talent to contend. How many of these bold outcomes materialize will go a long way toward determining whether 2026 feels like a successful first year or a stepping-stone season.
