Alabama has named sophomore Keelon Russell its starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Former Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban believes the bigger key to success may lie elsewhere on the field.

Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” shortly before the official announcement, Saban made clear that upgraded offensive line play is essential for whoever takes the snaps.

What Happened

Russell, a five-star prospect from the 2025 recruiting cycle, won the job over senior Austin Mack. The decision ends a lengthy competition that stretched through spring and fall camp.

Saban had watched tape of both players and offered a balanced assessment while emphasizing one critical factor.

“It’s going to be imperative, though, that the offensive line play better so that the quarterback, whoever it is, has an opportunity to play better,” Saban said. “I thought Ty Simpson was under a hell of a lot of pressure the second half of the season all the time. The ability to run the ball and stay in favorable down and distance is going to have something to do with that as well.”

Why This Matters

Alabama’s offensive line struggled at times in 2025, particularly in the second half of the season when Simpson faced consistent pressure. Saban’s point is straightforward: a young quarterback’s development and production will be heavily influenced by how well the line protects him and creates running lanes.

Russell’s mobility gives him a chance to extend plays when the pocket breaks down, but sustained success will still require better protection and a more consistent ground game.

Key Details Fans Need to Know

Saban described the two quarterbacks as different styles.

“I have watched some of the tape and I have been very impressed with both guys. They’re different. Keelon is more of a playmaker because of his legs, but that’s up to coach. I don’t know where his decision making and development is relative to the staff. The other guy, Mack, has a little more experience.”

Alabama quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis explained the decision to go with Russell by highlighting his playmaking ability.

“Keelon is gonna be the starting quarterback here because he’s a playmaker,” Ellis said. “He’s the guy that we know when the ball is in his hands, a lot of good stuff can happen… As coaches… we have to limit the bad stuff and the ‘young-player plays,’ but when the ball is in his hands, we have the ability to be an extremely explosive offense.”

Head coach Kalen DeBoer had previously expressed confidence in both options, saying the team could win with either player.

What Happens Next

Russell will make his first career start when Alabama opens the season against East Carolina on September 5. The Crimson Tide face a demanding schedule that includes Kentucky, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, and Texas A&M.

How quickly the offensive line gels and whether it can reduce the pressure Saban referenced will be among the most important storylines of the early season.

The Bigger Picture

Alabama is transitioning to a new starting quarterback while still addressing issues that limited the offense in 2025. Russell’s higher ceiling offers upside, but Saban’s comments serve as a reminder that individual talent at quarterback is only part of the equation.

Improved line play, better run support, and favorable down-and-distance situations will determine how much of that ceiling the Crimson Tide can actually reach in 2026.
