Ohio State Sits No. 1 in Preseason Poll, But Ryan Day Isn’t Buying the Hype

Ohio State enters the 2026 season atop the AP preseason poll, and with Julian Sayin leading a stacked offense built around Jeremiah Smith, national championship expectations are already running high in Columbus. Ryan Day, however, isn’t interested in preseason praise. While the Buckeyes may have the roster talent to win it all, their head coach has made one thing unmistakably clear to his team: talent alone won’t be enough.

Ryan Day’s Message to Ohio State: “Don’t Beat Yourself”

Speaking with the media, Day laid out his central philosophy for the 2026 season. According to Day, Ohio State has the potential to be a smart football team, but that potential means nothing without discipline. He stressed that the first step toward becoming a championship-caliber team is simply not beating yourself — a point he said the team has revisited repeatedly and needs to continue emphasizing moving forward.

Penalties Emerge as a Real Concern After Ohio State’s Second Scrimmage

While Day’s tone carried some humor, it pointed to a genuine concern building around the program. Following Ohio State’s second training-camp scrimmage, Day admitted that several issues were weighing on him — chief among them, a high number of penalties committed by his team. Day didn’t mince words, stating plainly that there were too many penalties in the scrimmage, and that penalties are ultimately a discipline issue. He reiterated that Ohio State simply cannot afford to beat itself, especially early in the season.

Ohio State’s Offensive Line Battle Starts to Take Shape

One of the biggest lingering questions for Ohio State’s 2026 roster is who will round out the starting offensive line. While Day has stopped short of officially naming his top five, he’s offered clear hints about which linemen have been getting the bulk of first-team reps. Day indicated that Carson Hinzman, Luke Montgomery, and Austin Siereveld have been working on the interior, with Ian Moore and Phillip Daniels rotating at the tackle spots — and that group has been developing chemistry together with extended first-team reps.

Based on Day’s comments, the projected starting offensive line currently looks like this:

  • Center: Carson Hinzman
  • Left Guard: Luke Montgomery
  • Right Guard: Austin Siereveld
  • Left Tackle: Ian Moore
  • Right Tackle: Phillip Daniels

Day also noted that several other linemen have earned reps with the starters throughout camp, including Joshua Padilla, Gabe VanSickle, Jake Cook, Carter Lowe, and Deontae Armstrong — depth that could prove valuable given the physical grind of a long SEC-style Big Ten schedule.

Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith’s Chemistry Has Ryan Day Encouraged

While the offensive line battle remains a work in progress, much of Ohio State’s success in 2026 will hinge on the connection between quarterback Julian Sayin and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. On that front, Day sounded genuinely confident. He explained that communication is the foundation of the offense’s operation — the center has to relay information up front, the quarterback has to communicate to the back end, and everyone has to work in sync. Day said that part of the operation has looked good so far, noting that the huddle-to-snap process has featured everyone on the same page, along with a natural rhythm and tempo that’s been working well.

Jeremiah Smith Reveals Ohio State’s Fix for Last Season’s Fourth-Quarter Struggles

Despite finishing a perfect 12-0 in the regular season last year, Ohio State’s season unraveled late, with the Buckeyes suffering difficult losses to both Miami and Indiana. Those collapses appear to have left a lasting impression on Ryan Day, and according to Jeremiah Smith, fixing late-game execution has become the team’s defining focus heading into 2026.

Smith addressed the issue directly during an appearance on the Triple Option podcast on August 26, explaining that the team talks often about its difficult schedule and understands that winning games in the fourth quarter is now the single biggest emphasis for the program. Smith said the idea originated with Ryan Day and has since become the team’s unofficial motto, with players actively searching for anything that can help them close out games late.

Why Ohio State’s Difficult 2026 Schedule Raises the Stakes for Discipline

Learning from last season’s late-game mistakes and correcting them is something Ohio State has prided itself on this offseason, and the Buckeyes will need that growth given what’s ahead. Ohio State faces six ranked opponents in 2026, with the majority of those matchups coming on the road — a scheduling reality that makes penalties, communication breakdowns, and self-inflicted mistakes even more costly than in a typical season. It’s a big part of why Ryan Day appeared so unsettled by the penalty issues he saw during practice, and why discipline, not talent, is shaping up to be the defining theme of Ohio State’s season.

What Ryan Day’s Comments Mean for Ohio State’s National Championship Chances

Between a loaded offense led by Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith, a talented but still-forming offensive line, and a roster that’s clearly aware of last season’s late-game shortcomings, Ohio State has the pieces to make a genuine championship push in 2026. But as Ryan Day has made clear, none of that will matter if the Buckeyes can’t clean up the discipline issues and self-inflicted mistakes that derailed last season’s playoff run. With one of the toughest schedules in the country awaiting them, Ohio State’s margin for error may be smaller than its preseason No. 1 ranking suggests.
