Michigan opens the 2026 season on September 5 at home against Western Michigan. It will be Kyle Whittingham’s first game as head coach, and several important questions remain unresolved as the Wolverines prepare for kickoff.

Contents
1. Who Wins the Key Position Battles?2. How Much of the New Schemes Will Be Ready?3. How Much Will the Passing Game Improve? The Bigger Picture

Here are the three biggest ones.

1. Who Wins the Key Position Battles?

Multiple starting spots still appear unsettled heading into game week.

The left tackle competition remains open. The wide receiver room is still sorting out the No. 3 role behind the top options. On defense, the starting edge opposite John Henry Daley has not been locked down.

How these battles are decided will influence both the floor and the ceiling of the 2026 roster. Settling them cleanly before Western Michigan arrives would give the coaching staff more clarity and the players more confidence.

2. How Much of the New Schemes Will Be Ready?

Michigan installed new offensive and defensive systems under coordinators Jason Beck and Jay Hill. The speed at which the players absorb those schemes will shape how much of the playbook is available early in the season.

Ideally, a team wants full access to its calls by Week 1. That is not always realistic with two new coordinators.

On the defensive side, there is positive news. Jay Hill recently said Michigan has already installed “100%” of its fall camp playbook. If that holds, the defense should be better prepared to play with confidence from the opening snap.

The offense’s progress will be watched just as closely.

3. How Much Will the Passing Game Improve?

This may be the most important question of all.

Bryce Underwood averaged just over 186 passing yards per game last season. Michigan upgraded the wide receiver room and brought in an offensive coordinator known for making life easier on quarterbacks. Those changes should produce a clearer improvement.

The real question is the size of that jump. Recent reports out of fall camp suggest Underwood has taken a step forward. If that progress carries into the regular season, the passing game could become a genuine strength rather than a limitation.

An above-average passing attack paired with what is expected to be an elite running game would make Michigan difficult to defend. The tough schedule still looms, but a functional passing game would raise the team’s ceiling significantly.

The Bigger Picture

These three questions — position battles, scheme installation, and passing-game development — will go a long way toward defining Michigan’s early-season trajectory under Whittingham.

Some answers will come in practice this week. The clearest answers will arrive on September 5 against Western Michigan.
