Ohio State opens the 2026 season as the clear No. 1 team in both the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll. According to pure roster talent, however, the Buckeyes are not the most loaded team in the country.

247Sports released its annual Team Talent Composite rankings on Thursday, placing Ohio State fifth nationally. Georgia leads the way, followed by Texas, Oregon, and Alabama.

What the Rankings Show

The 247Sports Team Talent Composite evaluates every FBS roster based on the high school recruiting rankings of the players currently on the team. It does not incorporate transfer portal grades — only a player’s original high school evaluation.

Top 5 in the 2026 Team Talent Composite:

RankTeamScoreAvg Rating5-Stars4-Stars
1Georgia1,003.6791.971369
2Texas985.1791.711542
3Oregon984.3391.731147
4Alabama973.5391.571145
5Ohio State964.2791.431152

Ohio State also ranks fifth in average player rating at 91.43. Georgia again sits first at 91.97.

This marks a slight drop for the Buckeyes, who had consistently occupied one of the top three spots in the ranking for several years. Oregon’s continued climb under Dan Lanning is one of the biggest stories of the 2026 composite.

Why This Matters for Ohio State

Talent alone does not win championships, but history shows it is a strong indicator. Since the Team Talent Composite began in 2015, nearly every national champion has ranked inside the top 15 (Indiana in 2025 was the rare exception).

Ohio State’s ranking still places the Buckeyes among the most talented teams in the country. The gap between No. 1 Georgia and No. 5 Ohio State is noticeable but not overwhelming. What stands out more is the quality of opponents the Buckeyes must face.

Ohio State’s 2026 Schedule Through the Talent Lens

The Buckeyes will play three teams ranked in the top 10 of the Team Talent Composite:

  • No. 2 Texas (Sept. 12, road)
  • No. 3 Oregon (Nov. 7, home)
  • No. 9 USC (Oct. 31, road)

They also face four additional teams ranked inside the top 50:

  • No. 11 Michigan (Nov. 28, home)
  • No. 22 Nebraska (Nov. 21, road)
  • No. 38 Indiana (Oct. 17, road)
  • No. 44 Iowa (Oct. 3, road)

In the traditional polls, several of these teams sit lower. Oregon is No. 2, Texas No. 5, Indiana No. 6, USC No. 14, Michigan No. 16, and Iowa No. 22. The talent rankings suggest some of those games may be even more challenging than the poll positions indicate.

Ohio State will play five of those seven higher-talent opponents on the road.

Important Context About the Rankings

The Team Talent Composite has limitations. Because it relies solely on high school rankings, it does not fully capture:

  • Player development after arrival on campus
  • Transfer portal additions and their current value
  • Chemistry, coaching, and scheme fit
  • Experience and returning production

Ohio State has long excelled at developing talent and integrating transfers. Those factors help explain why the Buckeyes can rank No. 1 in the polls while sitting fifth in raw recruiting-based talent.

The Bigger Picture

Being ranked No. 1 in the polls with the fifth-most talented roster is not a crisis — it is a reflection of how close the top of college football remains. Georgia, Texas, Oregon, and Alabama all possess elite rosters on paper. Ohio State’s ability to maximize its own talent, manage a brutal schedule, and sustain the standard under Ryan Day will determine whether the Buckeyes finish the year where they currently sit in the polls.

The 2026 season will test whether pure talent rankings or current form and coaching prove more predictive.

13. FAQ Section

Where does Ohio State rank in the 2026 247Sports Team Talent Composite?
Fifth, behind Georgia, Texas, Oregon, and Alabama.

Why is Ohio State No. 1 in the polls but only fifth in talent?
The polls reflect current expectations, returning production, coaching, and recent results. The Talent Composite is based only on high school recruiting rankings of players on the current roster.

Does the ranking include transfer portal players’ current value?
No. It uses only a player’s original high school ranking.

Which talented teams does Ohio State play in 2026?
Texas (No. 2), Oregon (No. 3), USC (No. 9), Michigan (No. 11), Nebraska (No. 22), Indiana (No. 38), and Iowa (No. 44).

Has Ohio State usually ranked higher in this metric?
Yes. The Buckeyes had been a consistent top-three program in the Team Talent Composite for several years before this ranking.
