Michigan defensive coordinator Jay Hill stepped to the podium for the first time in fall camp on Wednesday and delivered a measured update on two players the Wolverines are counting on heavily this season.
John Henry Daley and Rod Moore both recovering from serious injuries will begin camp on pitch counts. The news comes as Michigan prepares to face one of the toughest schedules in the Big Ten, including road games against Oregon and Ohio State plus a home matchup with defending national champion Indiana.
Experienced Corners Provide Stability for Michigan Defense
Hill inherits a secondary that already features proven contributors. Jyaire Hill, Smith Snowden, and Zeke Berry give the Wolverines three experienced cornerbacks who can help stabilize the back end.
That experience will be valuable against some of the conference’s most explosive offenses. Still, the defensive line and certain key playmaking spots remain areas of focus as the staff searches for consistent production.
John Henry Daley and Rod Moore Begin Camp on Pitch Counts
Two of the biggest questions entering camp involve Daley and Moore.
Daley followed Kyle Whittingham from Utah to Ann Arbor through the transfer portal and was expected to bolster the edge. He ruptured his Achilles in November 2025. While updates have indicated he is ahead of schedule in his recovery, Hill confirmed the defensive end will be managed carefully early in camp.
Rod Moore’s story is more familiar to Michigan fans. The safety tore his ACL before fall camp in 2024 and missed the entire season. He returned in 2025 but appeared in only three games, preserving a redshirt for 2026. His name remains legendary in Ann Arbor, yet durability concerns linger after the limited return last year.
Hill’s decision to place both players on pitch counts at the start of camp reflects a cautious approach rather than a full green light.
Why the Caution Makes Sense Early in Camp
Fall camp opened on August 5. With a full month remaining before the season opener against Western Michigan, the coaching staff has time to gradually increase workloads.
Michigan’s first major test comes at home against Oklahoma, a team expected to contend for a playoff spot. The Wolverines lost in Norman last season. Having Daley and Moore closer to full strength for that game would be ideal.
A pitch count does not mean either player is unavailable for the long term. It does, however, signal that neither is being thrown into unrestricted work from day one.
Monitoring the Situation as Camp Progresses
For a defense that needs reliable production on the edge and in the secondary, the health of Daley and Moore remains a central storyline. Michigan faces a gauntlet of high-powered offenses. Maximizing the availability of proven talent will be critical if the Wolverines hope to compete for a Big Ten title and a playoff berth.
It is still early. Smart management in the first days of camp can pay dividends later. Fans and observers will be watching closely to see how both players progress as practices intensify over the coming weeks.
The hope in Ann Arbor is that by the time the real games arrive, both stars will be ready to contribute at a high level.
