As Michigan prepares for its season opener against Western Michigan, one defensive position battle has quietly shifted. The Wolverines are still sorting out the starting edge opposite All-American John Henry Daley, and Dom Nichols has emerged as the clear breakout candidate.
Heading into fall camp, many expected Cameron Brandt to claim the job. Two weeks ago, however, right tackle Andrew Sprague named Nichols as the team’s best pass rusher. On Thursday, offensive guard Evan Link echoed that assessment.
When asked which defensive lineman gives the offensive line the biggest challenge, Link did not hesitate.
“Probably say Dom Nichols,” Link said. “Yeah, Dom’s a tremendous pass rusher. A lot of moves; he can do anything he wants. He’s really, really good and taking a lot of steps forward.”
Nichols Has Been a Breakout Star
Last season Nichols recorded 19 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and one sack. He ranked fourth on the team in TFLs but did not consistently get to the quarterback. Derrick Moore was the primary sack producer a year ago.
John Henry Daley returns as a proven force after an All-American campaign that included 11.5 sacks, seventh-most in the country. Michigan needs a reliable complement on the other side. Several names have been mentioned — Brandt, Nate Marshall, Carter Meadows, Tariq Boney, and Lugard Edokpayi — yet Nichols keeps rising to the top of the conversation.
Offensive lineman Nate Efobi also pointed to Nichols when asked about the defense’s breakout star.
“Dom Nichols,” Efobi said. “People haven’t heard a lot about him, but he’s a feisty guy, and he’s ready to show y’all this year for sure.”
Even Cameron Brandt, the player many expected to start, acknowledged Nichols’ edge.
“Honestly, I’d probably say that as well,” Brandt said. “I feel like it’s probably just his mindset and just how he attacks it. He’s very fluid, very athletic, and just feels like he knows what he’s doing out there. So yeah, when it comes to pass rusher, it definitely comes natural.”
Rotation Will Still Matter
Even if Nichols earns the starting nod, defensive coordinator Jay Hill is expected to rotate edge rushers to keep the group fresh. Brandt and others will still see meaningful snaps. The competition has simply elevated Nichols into the leading role during fall camp.
