Zack Marshall Apologized. The Texts Still Say What the Michigan Offense Looks Like.

Michigan lost to Minnesota 20-14, then lost the next news cycle in a group chat. Tight end Zack Marshall, a senior with no catch this season, had messages leak in the hours after the game. In them he aimed at offensive coordinator Jason Beck. On Tuesday he posted an apology. The apology is real. The frustration in the texts is the part the bye week still has to answer.

What the messages actually saidWhy the timing makes it worseApology and accountability are not the same job

“Last weekend, in the hours after we lost, I made some inappropriate comments that I regret,” Marshall wrote. “The game is won and lost as a team, and I pointed fingers instead of taking accountability. I let my frustrations speak for me in an emotional moment. I apologize to my teammates and coaches for the unnecessary drama that this has caused.”

He also said he will keep giving everything he has for the program. A Michigan spokesperson told ESPN the staff knows, and that coaches have already met with him about the words. That is the official ending. It is not the only reading.

What the messages actually said

The screenshots that spread Monday night were blunt. One, attributed to Marshall, said Beck had met with the tight ends and “told us none of us are valuable to this offense.” Another said the offense has no answer when a defense blitzes, that Michigan has an extra offensive lineman on the field every play, and that it runs different versions of power read. The line that will follow Beck is the short one: “Bryce is a good qb, beck is a problem.”

One of the messages even included a warning not to let it leave the chat. It left the chat.

Marshall is not a star throwing a fit from the top of the depth chart. He had 16 catches for 199 yards and a touchdown last fall. This year he has played in all five games, started against UTEP, and has not caught a pass. Hogan Hansen and Jalen Hoffman are ahead of him. As a group, Michigan tight ends have nine catches for 65 yards and no touchdowns. Nine of the team’s 69 completions have gone to the position. If a coach told that room it is not valuable to the offense, the snap counts already said it.

Why the timing makes it worse

This did not leak after a win. It leaked after Minnesota, the second straight game Michigan led and did not finish. The Wolverines are 3-2 and 0-2 in the Big Ten, the first 0-2 league start since 2014. The offense gained about 180 yards in Minneapolis. Underwood was 10-of-21 for 101 yards and two interceptions. The unit ranks 122nd in yards per game and 105th in scoring.

Kyle Whittingham had already called that performance unacceptable and said tough decisions could be coming. On the radio he said the bye would be self-analysis: what Michigan actually does well, which players have been the best, and whether those players are getting the reps. Marshall’s texts are a player doing that analysis in the worst possible place, then naming the coordinator.

Beck is not a stranger to Whittingham. He ran the offense at Utah and oversaw a top scoring unit there in 2025 before following the head coach to Ann Arbor. The install was supposed to fit Underwood. Five games in, a tight end in the meeting is saying the quarterback is fine and the coordinator is the problem. That is a locker-room sentence. Once it is public, it is a staff sentence.

Apology and accountability are not the same job

Marshall did the part he could do on Tuesday. He said he pointed fingers. He said the game is won and lost as a team. He took the drama back. For a senior who wants to stay in the building, that was the only move.

It does not make the scheme complaint disappear. Whittingham has already said Michigan is more of a downhill team and that the staff has to stop forcing calls that do not fit. That is close to what the leaked text described: extra linemen, power read, no answer for the blitz. A player should not say it in a group chat. A coach still has to decide if it is true.

The danger on a bye week is that the story becomes the tight end instead of the offense. Marshall has no catches. Beck calls the plays. Whittingham hired Beck. Underwood is the quarterback the offense was built around, and he just had his worst game. If the meeting with Marshall ends the conversation, Michigan will show up against Penn State on October 17 with the same third-down problem and a quieter group chat.

The apology was necessary. The texts were a symptom. The 20-14 loss, the empty tight-end stat line, and a coordinator now attached to the phrase “is a problem” are the thing the bye week was already supposed to fix.
