Jelani Thurman never found a consistent role at Ohio State. In his first game with North Carolina, he looked like a completely different player.

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end hauled in four receptions for 94 yards in the Tar Heels’ Week 0 win over TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The performance immediately put him on the map in the ACC and suggested the transfer was the right move.

Thurman’s Limited Role at Ohio State

Thurman arrived in Columbus as the No. 3 tight end in the 2023 recruiting class out of Georgia. Over three seasons he played in 34 games but managed only 13 catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

His best year came in 2025 with seven receptions for 84 yards and one score. Despite the pedigree, he remained buried on the depth chart and was projected as a depth piece again in 2026. The chance to be a featured option simply was not available with the Buckeyes.

Instant Impact in Chapel Hill

That opportunity arrived at North Carolina. In his debut, Thurman repeatedly beat the TCU defense and recorded a long reception of 35 yards. Ninety-four receiving yards from a tight end in any game is notable. Doing it in the first game with a new program is even more impressive.

Early returns suggest Thurman could become a significant piece of the Tar Heels’ offense. He already looks like a reliable downfield threat and matchup problem in the ACC.

Why the Transfer Makes Sense

Ohio State lost more than 30 players in the last transfer cycle, mostly depth and back-end roster pieces. Thurman fit that description. He was never expected to be a major contributor in Columbus this season.

At North Carolina he has a clearer path to playing time and a scheme that appears to feature him. One game is a small sample, but the early production shows he is ready to make the most of the fresh start.

The Bigger Picture

Thurman’s debut is a reminder that opportunity often matters more than pedigree once players reach the transfer portal. A highly ranked recruit who could not crack the rotation at Ohio State is already producing at a high level in the ACC.

If he sustains this kind of production, North Carolina will have found a valuable weapon — and Thurman will have found the featured role that eluded him in Columbus.
