Ann Widdecombe, the outspoken former Conservative minister who later became a prominent Reform UK figure and reality TV personality, has passed away at the age of 78. She was found at her home in Haytor Vale on Dartmoor, Devon, on Thursday, 9 July 2026.
Her management company, Cloud 9 Management, confirmed the news in a statement: “It is with great sadness that today we announce the passing of The Right Honourable Ann Widdecombe, DSG. We send our deepest condolences to Ann’s family and friends. We ask that the family’s wish not to be contacted at this sad time is respected.”
A Life in Politics: From Tory Minister to Reform UK Voice
Born Ann Noreen Widdecombe on 4 October 1947 in Bath, Somerset, she studied Latin at the University of Birmingham and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford. Before entering politics, she worked at Unilever and as an administrator at the University of London.
She was elected as a Conservative MP for Maidstone in 1987 (later Maidstone and The Weald), serving for 23 years until 2010. In John Major’s government, she held roles as Minister of State for Employment (1994–1995) and Minister of State for Prisons (1995–1997). Known for her strong traditional views, she was a vocal opponent of abortion and famously described her colleague Michael Howard as having “something of the night about him.”
A committed Eurosceptic, Widdecombe strongly backed Brexit. After leaving the Conservatives, she joined the Brexit Party (later Reform UK) in 2019, serving as an MEP for South West England until 2020. In 2023, she became Reform UK’s immigration and justice spokesperson.
Embracing TV Fame: From Parliament to Strictly Come Dancing
After retiring from the House of Commons in 2010, Widdecombe reinvented herself as a television personality. She appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where — despite limited dancing ability — her determination and humour won over audiences. Partnered with Anton Du Beke, she lasted nine weeks and became a fan favourite.
She also reached the final of Celebrity Big Brother in 2018 (as runner-up) and made guest appearances on shows like Have I Got News for You. She wrote novels and an autobiography, embracing her image as a forthright, no-nonsense public figure.
Tributes Pour In
Leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said Widdecombe played a “decisive role” in Brexit and that voters “loved her.” Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called her a “formidable politician who was never afraid to speak her mind.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer described her passing as a “huge, huge loss.”
Anton Du Beke remembered her fondly: “She was fun, upbeat, positive… she became a real friend.”
Police Investigation Underway
Devon and Cornwall Police are treating the circumstances as suspicious. A 26-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Newton Abbot on 10 July and remains in custody. Police have stated there is no evidence the incident was politically motivated or terror-related.
Investigations are ongoing, and the family has requested privacy.
Ann Widdecombe was a larger-than-life figure uncompromising in her beliefs, deeply principled, and surprisingly entertaining in the public eye. She leaves behind a legacy as one of Britain’s most distinctive political voices.
