Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels has spent much of the offseason establishing himself as the clear leader of the offense.
Yet the view from under center has also given him a daily look at the other side of the ball. After going against the Seminoles’ defensive front throughout fall camp and two preseason scrimmages, Daniels delivered a strong endorsement on Wednesday.
He believes Florida State will have the best defensive line in the ACC in 2026.
Ashton Daniels: “We Are Going to Have the Best D-Line in the ACC”
Daniels did not soften his words when asked about the defensive front.
“I truly believe that we are going to have the best D-line in the ACC,” Daniels said after practice. “I think there’s no doubt about that. Just our guys being able to go against that every single day — it’s the iron-sharpens-iron mentality, I think, that is really going to make our team better.”
The statement carries extra weight coming from the starting quarterback. Daniels faces that group in practice every day, giving him a firsthand sense of the pressure and athleticism the defensive line can generate.
Why the Daily Battles Matter for Florida State’s Offense

Florida State is breaking in five new starters along the offensive line this season. Facing a disruptive defensive front in practice creates a difficult environment, but Daniels sees the long-term benefit.
The constant competition forces the offensive line to improve at a faster rate. That “iron sharpens iron” approach, as Daniels described it, should help the unit prepare for the speed and physicality it will see once the regular season begins.
For a young offensive line still finding its identity, going against a talented group every day could prove valuable.
Florida State’s Speed Up Front Creating Problems
One of the traits Daniels and others have highlighted is the speed of the Seminoles’ defensive linemen. That athleticism has made life difficult for the offense during camp and scrimmages.
When defensive linemen can win with quickness as well as power, it creates consistent pressure and forces offenses to account for multiple threats on every snap. Daniels’ confidence suggests the group has shown enough in practice to stand out even against other strong ACC fronts.
What This Means Heading Into the Season
Daniels has taken on a larger leadership role this offseason, and his willingness to publicly praise the defense reflects growing belief inside the program. While bold statements in August always come with risk, they also reveal how the quarterback views the talent around him.
Florida State’s defensive line will be tested early against quality competition. If the group lives up to Daniels’ prediction, it could become one of the foundational strengths of the 2026 roster.
For now, the starting quarterback has made his stance clear. After facing the defensive front day after day, Ashton Daniels is convinced the Seminoles will field the best defensive line in the ACC.
