Michigan Dodges 1967 Ghost: How the Wolverines Escaped an 0-3 Big Ten Start and Reset Their Season

The Michigan Wolverines finally got their first Big Ten win of 2026, and it carried more weight than a typical conference victory. Saturday’s 21-18 thriller over Penn State at Michigan Stadium kept the program from opening 0-3 in league play for the first time since 1967.

Michigan is now 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. After a 3-0 non-conference start that included a close win over Oklahoma, the Wolverines dropped consecutive Big Ten games to Iowa (20-19 at home) and Minnesota (20-14 on the road). Those losses left them staring at a historical low that the program had not endured in nearly six decades.

The Game That Changed the Trajectory

Penn State entered the contest also searching for its first Big Ten win and left still winless in conference play (0-4). Michigan’s offense had been inefficient for most of the season, and the first half against the Nittany Lions followed the same pattern. Starter Bryce Underwood struggled, completing just 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards with two interceptions before Whittingham made the decisive move to bench him at halftime.

In came Tommy Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. Carr sparked the offense in the second half. Michigan scored all 21 of its points off Penn State turnovers. The decisive score came late when Carr ran it in from 12 yards out with 2:58 remaining after a Penn State fumble, giving Michigan the cushion it needed in a 21-18 final.

The Big House crowd responded loudly when Carr entered and again when he delivered. Lloyd Carr was in attendance, and the moment carried obvious emotional weight for the program. While the offense still has work to do, the win showed that a change at quarterback could unlock enough production to complement Michigan’s stout defense.

Why the 1967 Parallel Matters

Michigan last started 0-3 in Big Ten play in 1967 under Bump Elliott. That team finished 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The program has not repeated that early conference hole since. Avoiding it in 2026 is more than a trivia note. It preserves the chance for a meaningful second-half recovery in a season that began with realistic playoff aspirations.

Whittingham’s staff, featuring offensive coordinator Jason Beck and defensive coordinator Jay Hill, inherited a roster expected to compete at a high level after the previous regime’s success. The early Big Ten struggles have instead made Michigan one of the more underachieving teams in the conference so far. The defense has largely held up, but the offense has ranked near the bottom of the country in several key categories outside of the blowout win over UTEP.

What Comes Next

The schedule does not get easier. Michigan hosts No. 6 Indiana on October 24 in a Big Noon Kickoff game. Indiana is the defending national champion and arrives looking to bounce back from its own loss to Ohio State. Whittingham has indicated he has decided on a starting quarterback for that matchup, though he has not publicly named whether Carr keeps the job or Underwood returns.

Beyond Indiana, the Wolverines still face road games at Oregon and Ohio State, plus a home date with UCLA. A path to double-digit wins and a playoff conversation still exists if the offense stabilizes, but the margin is now zero. The Penn State win bought breathing room and prevented a historical embarrassment. It did not solve the larger offensive identity questions that have defined the first half of Whittingham’s tenure.

For a program accustomed to contending, simply avoiding an 0-3 Big Ten start is not the goal. It is the floor. Saturday’s result raised that floor just enough to keep the rest of the season interesting. The next several weeks will determine whether this was a temporary reset or the start of a genuine turnaround in Ann Arbor.
