Ohio State’s 19-15 win over Indiana on October 17 came with a major question mark. Starting quarterback Julian Sayin left the game in the fourth quarter after a hit from Indiana’s Mario Landino on a sack that forced a fumble. He returned to the sideline wearing a sling on his throwing arm. Coach Ryan Day said afterward that he did not have full details but that Sayin would “probably be out for several weeks.”

What Is Known About the InjuryTimeline and the Bye Week WindowFactors That Could Allow a Return for USCRealistic Outlook Based on Available Information

Ohio State has a bye week on October 24. The next game is on the road against USC on October 31. That creates a roughly two-week window between the injury and the next contest. Whether Sayin can return depends on the exact nature of the injury, how his body responds to treatment, and the medical staff’s clearance. No official diagnosis has been released by Ohio State as of the day after the game.

What Is Known About the Injury

Sayin was hit on his right arm between the elbow and shoulder area. Video showed his arm hanging at his side as he left the field. He later appeared with it in a sling. Day described the timeline only in general terms and said the staff would need more information after speaking with trainers. Multiple reports noted the injury as involving the throwing shoulder or elbow region.

Sports medicine doctors who reviewed available video offered unofficial assessments. One former NFL team physician raised concern about a possible ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) issue in the elbow. Another physician listed possibilities including a UCL sprain or tear and an acromioclavicular (AC) sprain in the shoulder. Those same comments noted that a more severe issue such as a fracture or full shoulder dislocation appeared less likely based on Day’s “several weeks” language rather than a season-ending designation. One estimate placed a minimum recovery window around two weeks and a maximum around four weeks, depending on the specific diagnosis.

These are outside observations based on public video and Day’s comments. They are not official medical findings. Ohio State has not confirmed any of those possibilities.

Timeline and the Bye Week Window

The injury occurred on October 17. Ohio State’s next scheduled game is October 31 at USC. That gives the medical staff about 14 days before the next contest. “Several weeks” is commonly understood to mean more than two weeks, which would place a typical return after the USC game. However, the exact phrasing from Day was “probably be out for several weeks,” and he emphasized that more details were still needed.

A mild sprain or strain that responds quickly to rest, ice, and treatment could theoretically allow a player to return in the two-week range if swelling and pain decrease and strength and range of motion return. More moderate ligament or soft-tissue damage often requires three to four weeks or longer before a quarterback can safely throw with velocity and accuracy. A more significant tear would push the timeline well beyond the USC game.

The bye week provides extra recovery time without the physical demands of a game. It also gives the training staff uninterrupted days for treatment, imaging, and monitoring. Players sometimes progress faster than initial estimates when the injury is on the milder end of the spectrum, but medical clearance for a quarterback involves more than just reduced pain. The player must be able to throw with enough velocity and accuracy to be effective, and the staff must be confident the risk of further damage is low.

Factors That Could Allow a Return for USC

Several elements would need to align for Sayin to play on October 31. First, imaging and examination would have to show a lower-grade injury rather than a significant tear. Second, swelling and pain would need to decrease steadily over the first week so that controlled throwing could begin during the bye. Third, Sayin would need to regain enough strength and range of motion to take part in limited practice before the USC trip. Finally, the medical staff and coaching staff would have to agree that he is cleared and that the benefit of having him outweighs the risk of reinjury on the road.

Ohio State has not indicated that any of those steps have been completed. Day’s postgame comments focused on the need to develop a plan around the backup rather than on a rapid return. True freshman Luke Fahey finished the Indiana game and is expected to prepare as the starter during the bye. Sophomore Tavien St. Clair is also on the roster.

Realistic Outlook Based on Available Information

The public information currently points more toward Sayin missing the USC game than playing in it. Day’s “several weeks” comment, the visible sling, and the lack of any optimistic update the day after the game all suggest the staff is preparing for an extended absence. Outside medical commentary has also noted that even a milder injury often carries a two-to-four-week window, which would make the USC game the earliest possible return rather than a likely one.

It remains possible that further evaluation could revise the timeline shorter if the injury is less severe than it first appeared. College programs sometimes update status after additional testing once the initial swelling decreases. Until Ohio State releases a more specific diagnosis or a revised timeline, any projection is based only on the limited information Day provided and the general recovery ranges associated with the types of injuries being discussed publicly.

The bye week gives Ohio State time to gather more medical information and prepare the offense accordingly. The remaining schedule after USC includes home games against Oregon and Northwestern, a trip to Nebraska, and the regular-season finale against Michigan. How long Sayin is out will shape how the Buckeyes approach that stretch. For the immediate next game, the available reporting indicates the staff is operating under the expectation that he will not be available. Further updates from the program in the coming days will provide the clearest picture of whether that expectation changes.
