College football season is nearly here, and the release of the 2026 preseason AP Top 25 poll has set the tone. Michigan Wolverines enter the year ranked No. 16, matching their position in the earlier Coaches Poll. After nine wins last season and a coaching change to Kyle Whittingham, voters are showing measured respect for the program. Here are three key thoughts on Michigan’s No. 16 ranking in the preseason AP Top 25.
Michigan’s Brutal 2026 Schedule Features Four Top-10 Teams

Even before the AP Top 25 rankings dropped, Michigan’s 2026 schedule looked extremely tough. The poll confirmed those concerns. On paper, the Wolverines will face four top-10 teams: No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Oregon, No. 6 Indiana, and No. 10 Oklahoma.
Two of those games will be played in Ann Arbor (against Indiana and Oklahoma), while Michigan must travel to face both Oregon and Ohio State. Additional ranked opponents include No. 18 Penn State and No. 22 Iowa, both of which come early in the season and will be hosted in Ann Arbor. This slate gives Michigan little room for error if the goal is a return to the College Football Playoff.
Michigan Projected as No. 5 in the Big Ten Entering 2026
The preseason rankings place Michigan essentially as the No. 5 team in the Big Ten. The traditional Big Ten powers plus USC (ranked No. 15) sit ahead of the Wolverines.
Voters are acknowledging Michigan’s nine-win season in 2025 and the arrival of Kyle Whittingham, who spent 21 seasons at Utah and built a consistent winner. However, Big Ten football presents different challenges than the Big 12, and Whittingham’s first year in Ann Arbor could include some ups and downs. Still, Michigan is ranked ahead of fellow conference teams Washington, Penn State, and Iowa, showing that the program retains respect heading into 2026.
Michigan Has Multiple Chances to Climb the Rankings and Reach the College Football Playoff
Michigan does not have an easy path back to the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines have missed the CFP the last two seasons after making it from 2021-2023. This year’s schedule will keep them under a microscope all season.
Bryce Underwood is expected to be one of the most discussed quarterbacks in the country, and he will face an early test when Oklahoma visits in Week 2. Michigan will also get shots at the Big Ten’s top teams. If the Wolverines can steal one or two wins against the conference’s elite, they will give themselves a realistic chance to re-enter the College Football Playoff conversation.
Michigan’s No. 16 ranking in the 2026 preseason AP Top 25 reflects both the challenges ahead and the opportunity that exists. With a demanding schedule, a new head coach, and talent in place, the Wolverines will have every chance to climb the rankings if they can deliver results against ranked competition.
